About the Doctors
Drs. Sonnenberg, Lapena and Planz are specialists in pediatric dentistry. Dr. Arvay is an orthodontic specialist. Each doctor strives to serve the residents of Flanders, NJ with the highest level of oral care available.
Edward M. Sonnenberg, DDS
Dr. Sonnenberg received his D.D.S. degree from Columbia University School of Dentistry in 1972 and completed an internship in Dentistry at Connecticut Valley Hospital in 1973. In 1975 he received a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from the University of Connecticut Hospital. Since 1975, Dr. Sonnenberg has taught at UMDNJ and the Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery. He is also an attending dentist at Morristown Memorial Hospital. Dr. Sonnenberg is a fellow of the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped.
Dr. Sonnenberg was named top Pediatric Dentist in New Jersey in the New Jersey Monthly Magazine. He has contributed articles and chapters for many publications and textbooks. He is a member of the American Dental Association, New Jersey Dental Association, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped. Dr. Sonnenberg serves on the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Association of Dentistry for Patients with Disabilities.
Joseph M. Arvay, DMD
Orthodontics for Children and Adults
Dr Joseph Arvay has orthodontic offices in Flanders and Morristown. He graduated with honors from Seton Hall University and received a master's degree from the National University of Ireland. He received his D.M.D. degree and certificate in orthodontics from the New Jersey Dental School at UMDNJ, where he was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor society. He also received a post-doctorate fellowship from Harvard University.
He has been an attending orthodontist on the dental staff of Morristown Memorial Hospital for over 10 years and has appeared on local TV to describe some of the recent advances in orthodontic treatment. He has lectured on adult orthodontic treatment to the dental staff at Overlook and Morristown hospitals.
Dr. Arvay was named as one of the Top 10 orthodontists in the New Jersey Monthly Magazine's dentist poll. He has had articles published in the American Dental Association Journal and the Clinical Preventive Dentistry.
Dr. Arvay is a past president of the Tri-County Dental Society. He is an an appointed member of the NJ Dental Assoc. Peer Review Committee for orthodontics.
Michael Goldkind D.M.D
Dr Goldkind graduated Summa Cum Lade from the University of Connecticut. He received his D.MD from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine and was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Society. Dr Goldkind continued his training receiving his certificate of orthodontics from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey
Dr. Goldkind is a member of the American Association of Orthodontics and the New Jersey Dental Association. Dr Goldkind utilizes the most current techniques available in the orthodontic field and is certified invisalign provider.
Michael Neiman D.D.S
Dr. Mike graduated NYU Dental School in 2005. He then completed his general practice residency in Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn. Following his residency, Dr. Mike worked as a general dentist in private practice for two years. He then began a residency program in pediatric dentistry at Maimonides Medical Center, where he served as Chief Pediatric Dental Resident.
As the father of four children, Dr. Mike has plenty of experience with kids. He has always loved working with children, as is evident in his past experiences as a summer camp director, youth group leader, swimming instructor, and teenage mentor. Children are naturally drawn to Dr. Mike's playful personality, and he makes each child's visit to the office a fun and exciting experience. Dr. Mike's goal as a pediatric dentist is to allay the anxiety that most kids associate with going to the dentist and to have them look forward to their office visits. Through his whimsical use of songs about cleaning teeth, Dr. Mike instills lifelong positive dental habits in his patients.
Christina Ciano D.D.S
Dr. Ciano received her Bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University with a major in Biochemistry and minors in Chemistry and Psychology. She then went on to receive her dental degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Following dental school, Dr. Ciano completed her specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry at Columbia University, New York Presbyterian Hospital.
It was at New York Presbyterian Hospital where Dr. Ciano gained extensive experience in managing the wide array of pediatric dental emergencies as well as profound experience in treating medically compromised children with extensive dental needs. She focuses her career on keeping up to date on the most recent advances in dental technology, dental materials, and techniques in order to provide the best possible care to her patients.
Dr. Ciano is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association, and the New Jersey Dental Association. She is married and lives in Northern NJ with her husband Joe. Away from the office, she enjoys spending time outside by running, biking, and skiing.
Mary Beth Giacona D.D.S
Dr. Mary Beth Giacona graduated with honors from Columbia University School of Dentistry and Oral Surgery in 2004. She then completed her specialty training in pediatric dentistry at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in 2006 and is certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Mary Beth has authored over a dozen publications, abstracts, and presentations. She is a leading expert in the field of cleft palate-craniofacial deformities, and is one of the few dentists trained in the NAM (nasoalveolar molding) appliance.
Dr. Mary Beth is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Columbia University. At Morristown Medical Center, she is an instructor and mentor in the General Practice Residency, as well as being a dental representative of the Craniofacial Team. She is an active member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Pediatric Dentists, New Jersey Dental Association, College of Diplomates- American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association. Dr. Mary Beth has been named one of America’s Top Dentists in the field of Pediatric Dentistry by the Consumer Research Council for 6 straight years.
Dr. Mary Beth volunteers her time with Healing the Children and various other international pediatric charities. She and her husband are the proud parents of four children-Henrik, Amara, Augusten and Edalene.
